Gay couples will be able to get married in Ireland from Monday.

The final legal stage following May's yes vote has taken place at Dublin Castle. Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald signed the commencement order for the Marriage Equality Act, while Tanaiste Joan Burton signed the accompanying legislation under the Civil Registration Act.

It's after the Marriage Bill was passed by the Seanad on October 22nd and signed into law by President Michael D. Higgins a short time later. The commencement order gives the start date for the legislation to take effect.

Sandra Irwin-Gowran from GLEN says today marks the end of years of hard work "I believe it's a very sombre, solemn occasion; the signing of the orders".

"None the less, it really does mark the last stage and for many people. Many, many years of long hard effort to get us here", she added.

The Justice Minister, Frances Fitzgerald, said “The Irish people blazed a trail on 22 May 2015 when they became the first sovereign people to choose marriage equality by popular vote.  They determined that Ireland should be characterised by solidarity and inclusiveness. They have reaffirmed the importance of marriage and family for our society.”

The Tánaiste Joan Burton said “The marriage equality referendum was a magical, moving moment – a massive leap for equality in this country. Today is another historic step in the journey away from discrimination and prejudice, and towards acceptance, tolerance and love.

“Having worked tirelessly to push the Marriage Act through the Oireachtas as quickly as possible, Minister Fitzgerald has today signed the Commencement Order giving effect to the Act, making marriage a reality for LGBT couples."
