Gardaí have released the name of a man whose body was found in a bog in County Meath this week.

45-year-old Gerard Daly was last seen at his home in Bailieboro in Cavan on the 26th of June 2011.

Gerard was formally from Knockmore Grove in Tallaght, Dublin.

A missing persons report was filed just three days after he disappeared but there was no sign of him until two days ago - a full three years later - when his remains turned up in a bog in Meath.

The find was made during excavation work at Oristown Bog near Kells on Thursday.

A burnt out shell of a car was also recovered at the scene and it’s understood the car was reported stolen in the Kells area in 2003.

A man in his 50’s was arrested in March last year in connection with this investigation but was released without charge the following day.

A technical and forensic examination at the scene has concluded and the investigation continues this evening.
