People living in rural areas, like Stepaside, are being told that Gardai are keeping an eye on them.

There's been a rise in the number of burglaries following the closure of a number of garda stations.

Today, the Garda Comissioner spoke about the issue, following the death of a man who died following a break-in at his house last month.

Noirin O'Sullivan says the death of carpenter John O'Donoghue was a 'tragic' case.

She says rural areas 'are not alone', despite growing concern about burglaries in isolated communities.

Commissioner O'Sullivan says the new garda recruitment campaign will help to prevent break-ins.

"The first I would like to do is obviously extend my sympathies and the sympathies of An Garda Siochana to the O'Donoghue family" she said.

"It was a very tragic case".

"As I've said I'm absolutely delighted that this year we already have seen 300 gardaí who have come out of training in the garda college in Templemore" she added.
