There are new signs of deep divisions within the Catholic Church.

Recent attempts by Pope Francis to make the religion more accepting of homosexuality were quashed by conservative clerics yesterday.

Bishops at a special synod about the family wanted changes made to a draft document that welcomed gay people into the church.

Instead the revised paragraph refers to homosexuality as one of the problems Catholic families have to confront.

It also repeats the church teaching that marriage is only between man and woman.

Meanwhile, The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network say the outcome of the synod is disappointing.

Bishops voted against the Pope’s move to include lesbian and gay people in Catholic Church.

Tiernan Brady, Director of Policy with GLEN says it sends a very negative message to Irish LGBT people.
