Dublin City Council is being asked to investigate if it can make it compulsory for all high rise buildings in the Capital to have sprinklers.

Councillors have been meeting to discuss fire safety following the major blaze at the Metro Hotel in Ballymun.

It took 60 firefighters five hours to bring the fire at the Metro hotel and apartment building under control.

With high rise buildings become more popular across Dublin city – councillors have been meeting to discuss how best to protect people

Dublin’s Chief Fire Officer says he’d like to see more sprinklers in buildings.

"I would like to see sprinklers expanded into much more building types, for example I think they should be in all nursing homes", he told the meeting.

Concerns were also raised at the meeting about the age of some of the equipment in Dublin Fire Brigade.

However, the Chief Fire Officer said resources are broadly in line with national standards.
