The baby boom could be over.

There's been a fall in the number of babies born along with a slight rise in the number of people dying.

The CSO figures for 2012 show a drop in the fertility rate of Irish women.

There were 71,674 babies born in 2012, 51 percent were boys and 49 percent were girls.

That's over 2000 fewer births than the previous year, a fall of around 3 percent.

The fertility rate for the year is now 1.99 - meaning it's lower than necessary to replace the population.

More than a third of babies; 35 percent were born to women who were unmarried and not in a civil partnership, an increase of 1 percent on 2011.

The CSO also looks at the other side of humanity, recording 29,186 deaths in 2012, an increase of just 730 on the previous year.

Almost one third of deaths were attributed to cardio-vascular diseases, while 30 percent were due to cancer.
