The Environment Minister says the money is there to do up every empty council house in Dublin.

950 of them are vacant at the moment, and cash to fix them was made available earlier this month.

Dublin City Council has been told to "get the builders in as quick as possible" to fix up the hundreds of boarded up houses.

The Environment Minister says he wants them back in use by Christmas. Speaking about the City Council, Alan Kelly said "as many teams as they want to get out there and do the work. They have complete and full control of that, that's very clear."

Minister Kelly has also promised that all 950 homes could have families in them by the end of the year, explaining that "all funding will be provided to do every single void in this city by Christmas, and they know that".

It comes as the Minister's hope to fast-track so-called modular housing hits a stumbling block. Alan Kelly has been hoping to speed up the process and get the pre-fab style homes built before Christmas.

He was hoping to by-pass tendering rules, but the Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has confirmed the request will have to be dealt with by politicians in Europe first.
