Environmental campaigners have dumped unwanted plastic packaging outside Leinster House in a protest against the amount of coffee cups, straws and other plastics we throw away each day.

Many people are guilty of heading into work clutching a take away cup of coffee or buying a bottle of water - and then throwing it away.

Mindy O’Brien from the environmental group VOICE says it’s really bad for the environment.

"We throw things away, we litter and we are spending €90m a year just with litter clean-up costs and all the litter is not being recycled", she said.

This afternoon, environmental campaigners dumped their unwanted plastic packaging outside Leinster House to coincide with an Oireacthas Committee debate.

The Waste Reduction bill has been proposed by the Green Party; their leader, Eamon Ryan, explains what it contains.

"A system, where if you bring a bottle back, you get a refund on it. Because then you get paid to recycle. You would get 10 or 15 cent - whatever price we would set".

The EU announced this week that it wants all plastic packaging in Europe to be recyclable by 2030.

The aim is to get rid of single-use plastics like coffee cups, straws and cutlery.
