The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said he promises to get rid of the levy on broadcasters, if the Fine Gael party is re-elected to Government.

The tax is based on the size and income of stations and was originally introduced at a time when Ireland was in recession.

Speaking on local radio station Ocean FM, the Fine Gael Leader said he realises the unique and important connection that independent radio stations have with its audience .

John Purcell, Chairman of the IBI said the organisation have been waiting for this change for a long time . He went on to say that “We welcomed this announcement from An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. Removing the burden of the levy will ensure that the diversity and plurality of voices on the independent radio airwaves in Ireland will be maintained, allowing for increased employment and a greater involvement in the lives of the local communities that we broadcast to.'
