Talks to avoid a strike at Irish Rail will resume this afternoon.

Management and unions held negotiations through the night to try to reach an agreement before a planned stoppage this Friday.

Train drivers at Irish Rail plan to stop work on all services during rush hour on Friday morning between 6am and 9am, in a row over past productivity.

Officials from Irish Rail, the National Bus and Railworkers Union and SIPTU convened talks at the Workplace Relations Commission yesterday afternoon, as part of a last minute attempt to avoid the action.

Those talks adjourned just before 5 o'clock this morning and will resume at 2 o'clock this afternoon.

On the way into the talks both sides said they were hopeful that a deal could be reached.

Drivers also plan to down tools in a second day of action on November 6th.
