Eating badly has overtaken smoking to become the world's biggest killer.

Scientists, looking at 190 countries, found poor diets caused 11 million deaths in 2017.

According to official statistics, tobacco killed 8 million people that year.

According to a report in The Lancet, we're eating too much salt and processed meats - and not enough fruit, nuts and seeds.

The Irish Heart Foundation says a lack of education on the benefits of eating healthily is a problem.

Sarah Noone, from the Irish Heart Foundation, said:

"There needs to be government policies and regulation to help support people to change behaviours".

A leading Dietitian and Nutritionist has also pointed the finger of blame at the government.

Sarah Keogh thinks a widespread campaign is needed to encourage people to make healthier choices.

"I think we can make changes but it's investing in those changes", she said.

Sarah acknowledged that work done to boost our intake of fruit and veg previously had worked.
