One of the world's biggest condom makers has launched a campaign - calling for the introduction of a safe sex emoji.

Durex says it believes many people find it easier to express themselves through emoji, and has suggested they may be more comfortable talking about protection if they can use a symbol instead of words.

The campaign has begun after research from the condom maker revealed that one third of young people don't care about safe sex.

A survey by Durex found that 30% 18-24 year olds in Ireland aren't sure how to protect themselves against STIs, while over a third say they don't care about safe sex and think HIV will never affect them or their friends.

Durex believes a safe sex emoji might spark a better conversation about protection, as its figures show that 84% of young people say they'd feel more comfertable talking about sex using an icon.

The worldwide campaign has been launched on social media using #condomemoji ahead of World AIDS Day.
