Greta Thunberg and Duncan Stewart have been nominated for the Freedom of Dublin. The climate change campaigners have been given the nod ahead of formal approval next week. They will be the first environmentalist to receive the award.

Dublin's Lord Mayor Caroline Conroy says Duncan Stewart is highly deserving of the honour. She said she can't think of any Irish person who had done more to spread the word about environmental issues over such a long period. She added that he was campaigning about the topic long before it received the global attention it has today.

Meanwhile, the Lord Mayor had asked Greta’s team some time ago if she would agree to accept the honour and received a reply late last night to say she would be happy to do so.

She said "Greta has been a significant presence on the international stage, particularly in rallying young people to the climate challenge.  I am a huge admirer of both Duncan and Greta. They are absolutely passionate about raising awareness of this huge issue. Our city has never before used this award to celebrate the role of environmental activists. We must recognise the incredible work done across generations to protect our shared city and planet.”

People who have received the award previously include Bill Clinton, Gay Byrne, Kellie Harrington and Jim Gavin.

Traditionally those who receive the honour are allowed to graze sheep in the city.

Ancient duties of a Freeman or Freewoman include being ready to defend the city from attack and joining the city militia at short notice.
