Homeowners losing gardens to the proposed Bus Connects project could get tens of thousands of euro in compensation.

The masterplan announced yesterday aims to create a new network of routes that will get people from the suburbs into town much quicker.

Because it involves widening many city streets, it will mean slices of people's gardens will have to be sacrificed.

The National Transport Authority says up to 1300 properties could be affected.

The Herald reports today that the compensation paid to those homeowners could be worth up to €25,000 euro per square metre.

It's not clear whether Dublin City Council would be compensated for the loss of on-street parking.

Meanwhile property experts fear the move will wipe up to a quarter of the value of some homes on the proposed routes.
