A number of Dublin suburbs saw a surge in dumping during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The volume of rubbish being illegally discarded in Lucan, Palmerstown and Fonthill has jumped by a third.

That's when figures for March and April are compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile South Dublin County Council says the level of rubbish in public bins has dropped by 13 per cent during the same period.

Councillor Shane Moynihan, who requested the figures, says the problem is becoming more noticeable;

"There's hotspots or blackspots now emerging around Lucan, Clondalkin, Palmerstown where illegal dumping is being repeated and repeated again."

He says it's not fair on residents; "for every piece of illegal dumping that needs to be collected, that's resources directed away from other provision for public realm or for our parks."

Dublin city council is among a number of other local authorities that have also reported an increase in illegal dumping in recent months.
