The National Union of Journalists has condemned the threats against a number of Dublin reporters at Independent News and Media.

Gardai have informed some of the INM reporters that their safety is at risk from criminal gangs.

The Taoiseach says those who engaged in the recent killings on our streets will be brought to justice and no resource will be spared in doing so.

In a statement, Enda Kenny said the journalists at whom these threats have been levelled have our full support.

Irish Secretary of the NUJ Seamus Dooley says the words must be matched by actions to tackle crime.

'I think one of the reasons its happening is there is money in drugs and there are people out there who are prepared to do anything to make money.

He went on to say that  'I think there is a need for increased Garda resources and I welcome the comments by an Taoiseach.'

However, Mr. Dooley said these comments 'will have to be matched by a commitment to resources and genuine resourcing to tackle this once and for all. We can not tackle this problem by occasional investment followed by cuts in Garda and the closure of police stations.

Meanwhile, Veronica Guerin's brother, Jimmy Guerin spoke about the rise in criminals gangs and said it's much more serious than it was twenty years ago.

He said that 'the gangs have re-emerged much stronger, much more powerful, much more ruthless and far more immoral than the ones that went before.'

He added: 'If we take the way we are living today, there was nothing gained from Veronica's death and yes, her death was in vain. I have always said her death was too much of a price to  pay.'
