The Health Service Executive has hit back at claims that it knew about the case of a woman at the centre of the latest abortion controversy back in May.

That's two months earlier than previously reported.

The HSE has said any inference that it misled anyone during the 8-22 week period of the woman's pregnancy is wrong.

It says the investigation announced yesterday is being undertaken to discern what happened during that time.

The Irish Times claims the woman had tried to take her own life while 16 weeks pregnant and it was a that point that a counsellor flagged the case with the health authority.

Her baby was delivered by C-section at 25 weeks after a doctor ruled the pregnancy was too advanced for an abortion.

Meanwhile pro-choice campaigners will hold protests in, Dublin and across the country later this evening calling for the repeal of the 8th amendment to the constitution.
