The Transport Minster has announced that Dublin is getting a rail line, linking the City Centre to Dublin Airport.

Paschal Donohoe has confirmed that a 16.5km light rail line will connect St Stephen’s Green to Swords.

Almost half of the route will be underground and will stop in places including Drumcondra, the Mater Hospital and Ballymun.

Works should start in 2021, and it's hoped will be completed by 2027.

It'll take 19 minutes to get from O’Connell Street to the Airport, and 31 minutes from O’Connell Street to Swords Estuary.

The Chief Executive of DAA, Kevin Toland said Metro North is "an essential element of Dublin Airport’s long-term growth plans", adding that "Dublin Airport has reserved land for a Metro station close to the passenger terminals".

Metro North will stop at DCU, which the university's Chief Operations Officer is happy about. Dr Declan Raftery said the line "will transform connectivity to and from DCU which is very welcome news for the university’s large and growing student and staff population".

The new Metro North has been announced as part of the Capital Spending Plan, which also includes investment in things like roads.

A plan to widen the N7 at Newbridge and create a bypass for Sallins have been announced.
