Toyota says its new initiative will help tackle Dublin's traffic congestion and improve the capital's air quality.
The Transport Minister has helped the company launch its car sharing idea, YUKO Toyota Car Club.
Ireland is the first country in which Toyota has launched YUKO, and it will initially roll-out in Dublin with 15 vehicles across three city centre locations. It means people who don't own a car can rent one for an hourly or daily fee.
All the cars are environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles, which the Transport Minister is pleased about. Shane Ross said "Low emissions, urban congestion and mobility are high on our agenda and we believe that the car sharing model is a credible solution to improving these important problems."
"With the added bonus of using hybrid vehicles, YUKO Car Club is an excellent addition to the transport options in Dublin City", he added.
YUKO will have five cars available in Smithfield/Kilmainham, and will shortly be rolling out in IFSC/Ringsend, and Ranelagh/Rathmines. Members can book in advance or on-the-spot, and must drop back their cars from the location they picked them up.
It costs €50 to sign-up, and €6 a month after that. Drivers will then be charged an hourly or daily rate depending on what model they choose.
