Dublin Fire Brigade is expected to be routinely using drones by the end of the year.
So far six fire fighters are trained to use the devices, according to The Irish Times.
The paper says a massive fire in Ballymount earlier this year presented the first opportunity to test their effectiveness.
Drones can climb higher than ladders and allow crews to better assess emergencies.
They're already in use in the UK where they're fitted with cameras which can see through smoke.
