Senior Gardaí have been told some communities in Dublin are "teetering on the edge of lawlessness."

Dublin city council's Joint Policing Committee heard yesterday that residents are afraid to go Gardaí as they don't trust them.

Some parts of Dublin are 'communities in trauma', similar to conflict zones, according to Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan.

He told the city council's JPC that the trauma was rooted in drug-related intimidation, mental health problems, addiction and criminality according to the Irish Times.

The rep for Ballyfermot and Drimnagh said these areas had a history of being isolated and that the pandemic had contributed to that.

The head of the Policing Authority Helen Hall said drug intimidation was a problem across the country, but particularly in deprived areas, and it was leaving people scared to go to Gardaí.

Chief Superintendent Brian Woods told the meeting they had an inspector in every division where people could report the crime in confidence. He said they're aware of those involved and are putting in interventions around those people.
