The head of the HSE says a review of ambulance services here in the city is not a “land grab”.

Tony O’Brien was speaking after it emerged there are proposals to take the service away from Dublin Fire Brigade who’ve been running it for 150 years.

The Director General was at a meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee where they were discussing health insurance, Portlaoise Maternity services and the ambulance review.

He says there’s more “heat than light” in the discussions surrounding the ambulance service here in the city and says a review is needed. But he says he hopes once it’s done – that Dubliners will get the best service possible.

A protest by Ambulance and Fire Brigade staff is due to happen on Monday evening.
