A Drimnagh man who lured a teenager to his death by pretending to be a girl has lost an appeal to have his murder conviction overturned.

Marcus Kirwan of Cooley Road raised concerns about his identification as a suspect and the legality of his arrest.

Christine Keogh remembers her nephew David Byrne as a happy teenager who would have done anything for his mother.

In March 2011, the 19-year-old was lured to his death by Marcus Kirwan who tricked him into meeting him by sending text messages pretending to be a girl.

Kirwan was jailed for life in February 2013, but his lawyers appealed his conviction, claiming his arrest was unlawful, certain CCTV footage shouldn’t have been used and the methods used to identify him as a suspect weren’t fair. However, the three-judge panel dismissed his appeal today.

The Byrnes say today’s judgement will help them find peace, but Angela Byrne says she’ll never forgive Kirwan for taking her nephew from them.
