DNA Database Helps Gardai Solve More Than 200 Crimes

The new DNA database has helped gardai solve more than 200 crimes after the system became operational 7 months ago.

Officials say that as a result of matching suspects to samples taken at crime scenes some 215 previously unsolved cases have been detected.

The offences range from burglary and theft to more serious crimes such as sex assault and false imprisonment.

They include a serial thief whos DNA put him at the scene of 13 burglaries.

To date over 2000 crime scene samples have been uploaded onto the database.
