It's been confirmed that a plan to develop a DART Underground won't be going ahead.

The Transport Minister says the tunnel needs to be redesigned, and that the cost of the project needs to be lowered.

Paschal Donohoe said "a project of such magnitude - in the order of €4 billion - has to be designed and delivered in a way that best ensures cost effectiveness for the taxpayer and the State."

A plan to extend the current DART line to Balbriggan has been given approval, as well as electrification of the rail-lines to Drogheda and Hazelhatch.

Minister Donohoe said he also informed Government that "I intend to progress elements of the overall DART Expansion Programme which bring value in themselves, subject to appropriate business cases and the availability of funding.”

The government will soon start buying land and buildings along the new line so works can start.

It could be 2023 before planning will be sought for a new Underground tunnel for Dublin.
