Gardai will be cracking down on boozy teenagers on Dublin’s beaches this summer.
Operation Irene will see more Gardai on beaches and in parks where anti-social behaviour and violence has happened in the past.
Over the last two summers, buses have had to be diverted and DART’s stopped because of drunk and rowdy teenagers causing havoc in places like Portmarnock and Howth.
This year, the Gardai and Dublin City Council have come up with a plan to stop beaches and parks from becoming no-go areas when the sun shines.
They’ll target underage drinking as well as drinking alcohol in public places.
Fianna Fail’s Daithi De Roiste is chair of the city council’s joint policing committee.
"What we're looking to do is we're looking to say is right let's get extra Gardai in presence here, cut down on these kids drinking alcohol. Lets cut down on them being drunk and hopefully then there will be a reduction on public order offences".
He added that families need to feel safe when they’re going out to enjoy public amenities.
"People would be worried that there would be youths, or there might be a congregation of people it doesn't have to be youths, that are just sitting there drinking alcohol and make things very, very uncomfortable for the citizens of the city. So hopefully now, Operation Irene will give people more confidence to go to the streets, beaches and parks".
Operation Irene comes into force on June 1st and runs until August 31st.
