Plans to use an empty Georgian house on Parnell Square for student accommodation have been refused by Dublin City Council.

It was turned down due to a lack of open space and poor communal facilities.

The owners of the building on Parnell Square West want to turn it in to a 13 bed student facility but the council criticised this saying it would be "difficult to think of a less suitable use of a protected structure.

It said the house had no private open space for students and objected to the location of kitchen and dining facilities in the basement.

The owners intend to appeal the decision citing the lack of student accommodaiton in the city.

Yesterday it emerged there is a 25 thousand student bed shortfall, with the problem worst in Dubin and other cities.
