Clontarf Sea Wall Could Be Lowered

The controversial sea wall in Clontarf could be lowered in certain places, according to an expert drafted in to try and end the row over the flood defence. Locals have been up in arms about plans to erect the wall, which they say would ruin their sea view.

Independent expert Dr Jimmy Muprhy was tasked with investigating the project after an impasse between the City Council and local residents. Work on the 460 metre long wall was stalled while the review was carried out.

Dr Murphy says the height of the wall is justified but it could potentially be lowered at given points where the sea view is most compromised. He has added that the local authority would have to constantly re-evaluate the risk of flooding, in case the wall needed to be raised some time down the line.

Members of the Clontarf Residents Association say they feel vindicated by the report. Speaking to 98FM News, spokesperson Deirdre Nichol says this is what they'd been saying this all along. She added locals are quiet happy with the wall in front of the houses and businesses. However the section that runs alongside the park doesn't need to be as high.

The CRA says the next step now will to be sitting down with the City Council once they have had tome to consider the.
