A Clondalkin man has lost his appeal for a seven year jail sentence for arson.

Patrick Maughan from Boot Road was convicted of setting fire to a block of apartments because of a family feud.

In July 2013, a fire broke out at a block of apartments at Thornfield Square in Clondalkin.

A woman saw the blaze and raised the alarm. 39 people including children were evacuated and some had  to climb over their balconies to escape. Almost 400 thousand euro worth of damage was caused.

30 year old Patrick Maughan from Boot Road in Clondakin was sentenced to seven years in jail for arson which he appealed. The court heard he had taken alcohol and valium on the night of the blaze and he also has a low IQ.

The barrister for the State said the original judge had taken all matters into consideration when sentencing. The court of appeal agreed and dismissed the case.
