Dublin City Council has spent €1.1 million Euro cleaning up illegal dumping.

The figures were released to a city councillor and cover 2013 and 2014.

Fly tipping has been increasing since bin collections in Dublin city were privatised, with homeowners now having to pay as much as 9 euro per collection.

Sinn Fein’s Noeleen Reilly says it’s a disgrace that the council have had to divert much needed funding into cleaning up after other people:

“It’s certainly something we don’t need at the moment. We have very tight resources,  we’ve a huge homeless crisis and yet we’re spending all these additional sums of money on illegal dumping”.

She said the city council are doing everything they can to stop fly tipping including knocking on peoples doors to see if they have their bins collected.

“I know of a couple of people who have signed up and previously would have been responsible for dumping in the area, which is great to see”.

It comes as Dublin City Council told 98fm news that 128 submissions were made by the public in their new litter management plan.

The plan, which will tackle things like illegal dumping and graffiti, is due to be published at the end of the summer.
