Christmas in the city has officially begun.

Choirs, stilt walkers and the Original Rude Boys entertained hundreds of Dubliners before the lights on Grafton Street were switched on.

The event, MC’d by 98FM’s own Damien McCaul, kicked off Christmas in the city.

The Original Rude Boys told 98FM News it was an honour to be asked to play and turn on the lights.

"Because we're local boys, it feels pretty damn good to be honest. Because this has been happening for years and seeing the crowd when we were coming in, it's insane how much people turn out to see the lights of Grafton Street."

They were helped by Love Hate star Laurence Kinlan – who played Elmo in the drama.

He says it’s great to turn on the lights with his friends.

"It's lovely to be asked and it's great to be asked also with the lads who I know and are great mates of my brothers, The Original Rude Boys who are local lads and grew beside me as well. It's an honour and it's a pleasure to come over and turn on the lights here and it's something everyone looks forward to and it's a nice time."

However, the city’s first Traditional Christmas market isn’t opening tonight.

Today’s adverse weather conditions mean it won’t open to the public until noon tomorrow.
