Tony Blair is being called on to help a Dublin teenager who's gone on hunger strike in a prison in Egypt.

Ibrahim Halawa has been in prison since he was 17 when he was arrest with his three sisters during a siege in a mosque in Cairo last year.

His sisters were released but Ibrahim is still in custody and is now on hunger strike.

He's facing a number of charges including murder and arson and could be sentenced to death as part of a mass trial.

His sister Nosayba saw him in prison at the weekend where he told her he was recently beaten.

"Stayed facing the wall, his hands behind his head, they left him like that for a few hours. They dragged him and dragged the people with him one by one from the cell, forcing them to go out. After they searched the cell, they took everything they have, even the washing brush, toothbrush, everything."

A legal charity has been helping Ibrahim in Egypt.

Reprieve are calling for Tony Blair to intervene in his case, saying Ibrahim was a child when he was arrested.

Tineke Harris is the legal director of their death penalty team.

"Tony Blair is an advisor to the current Egyptian regime and clearly has alot of influence. And we're calling on him and the Irish Government to do everything they can to seek Ibrahim's immediate release."

Ibrahim was due to stand trial last week but it was deferred.

It's not known when a new date will be set.
