Black Friday could be off to a slow start in Dublin.

Early reports suggest tills aren't ringing as frequently as last year.

Black Friday is an American phenomenon which began in the 60s. It falls on the day after Thanksgiving and is so called because it's traditionally the day retailers go from being in the red, to making a profit.

Irish shoppers have embraced the concept, with retailers here tempting customers with big discounts and deals.

It's being spread across the weekend this year, both in town, at shopping centres and online.

Thomas Burke of Retail Ireland admitted it had got off to a slow start in some areas "we're hoping that after lunctime there will be a marked increase in footfall. We have heard mixed reports about how busy or quiet it was starting off".

While discounted goods are an early Christmas present for customers, it's a double edge sword for retailers.

It gets more people into stores, but businesses have to hire extra staff and take a hit on their margins.

Irish shoppers are expected to part with €128M this weekend in Black Friday sales.
