Dublin Fire Brigade says it could take days to fully extinguish a blaze in Ballymount.
The fire broke out in an Industrial Estate just after ten this morning.
A plume of thick black smoke is still engulfing the area, as more than fifty fire-fighters attempt to bring the blaze under control.
Two aerial turntable ladders are pouring a tonne of water a minute onto the fire which is on the ground and upper levels of the building while fire-fighters with breathing apparatus are inside.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer on the scene is Denis Kiely.
"The fire is quite extensive, our tactics currently are to split the building into two sections and we're successful at the moment in holding off the fire on one side of the premises."
"We'd hope in the next few hours to have the fire under what we call, under control. The fire out itself, I expect the fire service to be here through the night".
Businesses near the fire were evacuated today as strong winds were blowing thick smoke towards them.
Residents in nearby Walkinstown and Drimnagh, especially those with breathing problems, are being asked to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.
Drivers in the Ballymount Industrial Estate are being asked to take care and while the smoke isn't affecting the M50, motorists are being urged to keep their eyes on the road so as they don't cause an accident.
