A Ballyfermot man has been sentenced to 8 months behind bars for destroying his cell in Mountjoy Prison.
Twenty four year old Robert Ellis from Ballyfermot Parade had pleaded guilty to the offence which resulted in €2000 worth of damage.
The court heard that in February 2014, a prison guard heard shouting and banging coming from one of the cells.
When he looked inside, he could see the accussed Robert Ellis damaging the cell, and the toilet and mattresses had been pulled away.
The barrister for the accused says his client knows his behaviour was unacceptable but there was a reason for it.
The court heard he had been coughing blood, got a fright and wanted to get the attention of the guards.
The judge noted his guilty plea but said he had cost the State €2000.
He sentenced him to 8 months in prison.
