A Balbriggan man has appeared in court charged with stealing a car that was allegedly used to injure several Gardai on Saturday night.

One of the officers is due to have surgery today after being crushed between two cars.

Det Garda Lucy Wood wore a sling on her right arm as she described what’s alleged to have happened on Saturday night.

She said she was one of three Gardai who approached a car at Clonuske Rise in Balbriggan. It had been reported as stolen following a burglary in the area.

The driver reversed at speed, dragging two of her colleagues along the road, she said. One of them was thrown from the car, while the other, Garda Ciaran Murrihy was crushed when it hit another car. Another Garda was injured after his patrol car was rammed.

Patrick McDonagh of Bath Road, Balbriggan was arrested and charged with stealing the car and criminal damage, while Amy Guildea of Dún Saithne, Balbriggan is accused of being a passenger in a stolen vehicle.

Both appeared in court today where Mr. McDonagh was remanded in custody, while his co-accused was granted bail.
