Now don't shoot the messenger, because this could be hiiiiighly offensive to our Australian buddies... but an Aussie academic reckons the country's accent may have developed as a result of drunkenness.

Communications expert Dean Frenkel from Victoria University in Melbourne says the distinctive twang has its roots in the 'alcoholic slur' of early settlers.

He's given us an example of what he means:

Some radical stuff there Dean, but imagine if it never happened? We may never have been gifted phrases like 'rack off'

... Or a gajillion quotable moments from Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom like "Pam Shortt's broken both her legs, and I wanna dance with you"

And for most of the mid-90s, people couldn't stop saying "You're terrible, Muriel" after Muriel's Wedding:

And while we're at it, how can we not look at some back-in-the-day Home and Away featuring Blake, Finlay, Sophie, Pippa, Adam and Ailsa. Sophie's freaked she might be pregnant. Classic stuff.

And sure lookit, we'd get in fierce trouble if we talked about Home and Away and didn't mention Neighbours. G'wan Harold and Madge!

Are there any classics that we've missed? Tweet us @98FM!
