The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to drop a charge of attempted murder against a man who attacked another man with a machete.

Martin Cunningham, of Warrenstown Drive, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15, admits producing the weapon and has also pleaded guilty to seriously assaulting the man.

On April 10th 2019, Kenneth Fitzsimons staggered into Finglas Garda Station, covered in blood.

Martin Cunningham appeared in court one week later charged with seriously assaulting Mr Fitzsimons on Liam Mellows Road in Finglas and of producing a machete during the course of the same incident.

Cunningham was later charged with the more serious offence of attempted murder and his trial was due to get underway this week, however, the judge was told today that the DPP has decided not to pursue its prosecution for the attempted murder.

The other two charges were then put to the 27yo, who pleaded guilty to both.

His sentence hearing is due to take place on January 31st.
