It's claimed the army was on standby to stamp euro notes as temporary Irish punts at the height of the eurozone crisis.
The Sunday Times reports the contingency plan was in place in 2012 just in case the currency collapsed.
The paper also says there was a separate plan to print punts with the word 'draft' stamped on them, so they couldn't be used if they were mistakenly circulated.
This may go some way to explaining why the Taoiseach told a conference in Madrid last month, that the army might have had to be deployed to protect banks.
He was forced to retract the comments, saying there had been no specific warning from the governor of the Central Bank to that effect. Instead Enda Kenny said he'd been told extra security might have been required.
