A live grenade was found in Galway last night.

The army bomb squad was called out when the historic device was discovered during the renovation of a building in the Raheen area.

The team arrived on scene at around 10 o'clock and the bomb was then safely transported to an open green area for a controlled explosion.

The grenade dated back to the early twentieth Century and would have been used during the War of Independence, as well as first and second World Wars.
