Appeal Court To Hear Challenge To Marriage Equality Referendum

An application to legally challenge the result of the Marriage Referendum will be heard by the Court of Appeal today.

It's after the High Court refused leave to Gerry Walshe, an electrician from Lisdeen Road, Co Clare and Maurice Lyons, a gardener with an address at Callan, Co Kilkenny, to lodge proceedings against the vote.

The action has delayed the Government's plans to have the legislation enacted by the autumn.

Dr Fergus Ryan Lecturer in Law at NUI Maynooth says the applicants must prove there was something substantially wrong with how the referendum was conducted:
