An appeal hearing is due to get underway this morning against a sentence handed down to a man who repeatedly raped his girlfriend as she slept.

Magnus Meyer Hustveit received no jail time after being convicted last July, and returned to Norway.

His girlfriend waived her right to anonymity so he could be named.

The accused had admitted to raping her a number of times while she slept and was convicted of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault between 2011 and 2012..

He was given a seven year sentence, all of which was suspended. The Director of Public Prosecutions is appealing this, arguing that it was unduly lenient.
