A local Councillor believes the axing of an elite Garda unit will lead to an “open season” for burglars across Dublin.
The anti-burglary squad, which was set up as a direct response to a rise in break-ins, is being shut down amid health and safety concerns.
This highly skilled unit was set up two years ago as part of the Garda response to a spike in burglaries across Dublin.
It was a huge success as officers worked round the clock to keep an eye on well-organised criminal gangs and keep homes and businesses safe.
It now seems the unit is being dismantled with reports suggesting its operating hours are affecting the health and safety of officers.
Fingal County Councillor Jack Chambers says it’s a worrying development, and is calling on the Minister for Justice to explain why it’s being axed.
Whatever the reason, it seems the unit is needed now more than ever with the latest CSO figures showing burglaries across the city and county rose by almost a fifth in the 12 months leading up to March of this year.
