A baby abandoned on the side of a road in Rathcoole has been temporarily placed in State care as efforts to track down her mother continue.

The newborn baby girl has been in hospital since she was found on Friday afternoon.

Yesterday, Gardai once again appealed to the mother of the abandoned baby and moved to reassure her that she’s not in trouble.

There has been a positive response from the public over the past four days, but still no word from the mother, whose identity remains a mystery.

The baby, named Maria by hospital staff, was found on Steelstown Lane in Rathcoole on Friday afternoon. She was placed inside a Marks and Spencer bag after being wrapped in a Penneys fleece throw and black bin bag.

While the search for her mother continues, the Child and Family Agency TUSLA has secured an interim care order which places baby Maria in their care for 28 days.

The order was needed to allow for various tests, including a DNA test, to be carried out and can be re-examined next month.

Anyone with information about the missing mother or any of the items found on baby Maria is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station or the Garda Confidential on 1800 666 111.
