999 operators are to go on strike later this month in a row over pay.

They're expected to walk out the day before the general election. They're asking to be paid a Living Wage of €11.50 an hour.

The Communications Workers Union - which represents the workers - says to protect the service - the work stoppage will take place only at the Navan 999 centre between 8am and 8pm.

It means the other centres - in Ballyshannon Co. Donegal and in Dublin will operate as normal.

The companies that run the service - which include BT - say they'll make sure calls will still be answered.

BT said it has "heard media reports that the Communications Workers Unionwill be conducting a 12 hour stoppage isolated to the Navan 999 Emergency Call answering Service from 8am to 8pm on Thursday, February 25th."

"We understand that Conduit Global has been working very closely with their employees to address their concerns and significant progress has been made in the past three weeks."

"BT recognises that the 999 service is one of the most critical services for Irish citizens and we are supporting Conduit to make every effort to ensure that this vital service delivers to the highest quality levels, despite industrial action by the CWU."
