999 Operators Could Go On Strike Over Pay

The people who answer 999 calls could be going on strike.

They say the companies that run the service are refusing to pay them a living wage of €11.50 an hour.

999 calls in Ireland are answered in just over half a second - one of the fastest response times in Europe.

BT Ireland and Conduit run the emergency call service in Ireland, and the Communications Workers Union claims bosses have refused to discuss pay with staff.

However Conduit say they met with all employees to discuss issues and that all operators received a 10% pay rise last November.
