A city councillor says an 81 year-old homeless woman was discovered on O'Connell Street last night, having been discharged from hospital without anywhere to go.

Independent representative Christy Burke says the group, Reaching Out To Homeless, came across the woman and contacted him.

Homeless services were called and the woman was put up in a hotel, where she's expected to stay for a number of days.

Councillor Burke has criticised St James's Hospital, saying they shouldn't have discharged the woman when she didn't have a place to stay;

"If there's somebody attending a hospital and they're 81 years of age and vulnerable and weak and if nothing more medically can be done, well shame on whatever institution that would release them back onto the streets, with no roof over their head."

He went on to say it's hoped a homeless charity will be able secure more permanent accommodation for the woman.
