A lot happened in 2015. From the Graham Dwyer murder trial to the Tunisia and Paris attacks and that small vote that a few people came home for.

Listen to Brendan O'Loughlin's two special reports looking back at some of the stories that 98FM covered this year, and take a look at some of 2015's pictures below.

In years to come, the stand-out moment for Ireland in 2015 will undoubtedly be the passing of the marriage equality referendum on May 23rd. A total of 1,201,607 people, or 62%, voted Yes.

This year, Ibrahim Halawa turned 20 in an Egytian jail, where he has been held for over two years without trial. The Dubliner had been arrested at a political protest while on holiday in Cairo.

 

On March 27th, after the most high-profile and gruesome murder trial Ireland had ever witnessed, Graham Dwyer was found guilty of murdering childcare worker Elaine O'Hara in the Dublin Mountains.

 

We said goodbye to a number of famous faces in 2015, including Cilla Black, Jonah Lomu and Tony Fenton, while 98FM was heartbroken to lose its Sports Editor, Johnny Lyons.

 

2015 was the year Dublin fell out of love with its seagulls, with one even stealing a woman's phone in the Botanic Gardens. One politician compared their behaviour to 'a rabbit with myxomatosis or a cow with mad cow disease'.

Adele finally said 'Hello' in the biggest musical comeback of the year, releasing '25' which went on to smash records around the world. She also sold out 2 Dublin shows in record time. Adele said she thought her success was 'a bit ridiculous'.

One Direction played Croke Park - before parting ways towards the end of the year. Niall Horan said he was 'looking forward to doing nothing'.

Millions of people desperate to flee conflict in places like Syria made dangerous journeys to Europe. Ireland promised to offer a home to at least 4000 refugees and migrants.

An Irish woman was killed in a terrorist attack in a holiday resort in Tunisia. Laurence and Martina Hayes, a couple in their 50s from Athlone, and Lorna Carty, a mother-of-two from Meath.

130 people were killed in one night of terrorist attacks in Paris. ISIS members detonated suicide vests and fired shots in seven areas of the French capital - including a packed out rock concert. 

 

Dublin was struck by tragedy this year, when 10 people - 5 adults and 5 children - were killed in a halting site fire in Carrickmines. There was a row over where the survivors of the blaze would be temporarily housed.

Irish nursing student Karen Buckley was murdered in Glasgow, and six Irish students were killed in California when a balcony collapsed in Berkeley.

 

Ireland lost out to Argentina in the quarter-final Rugby World Cup, and Conor McGregor scored the fastest UFC title ever - beating Jose Aldo in 13 seconds in Las Vegas.

Clerys shut without warning after the iconic O'Connell Street department store was bought by Natrium, which said it didn't have the money available to pay staff redundancy. Taxpayers ended up footing the bill of €2.5M.

For the first time ever, Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year wasn't actually a word. The 'Face with Tears of Joy’ emoji being crowned came in a year where emoji use went through the roof.

We were introduced to Caitlyn Jenner, described at the world's most famous openly transgender woman. At a speech she explained how she feels 'We're all different and that's not a bad thing'.

Madonna took a backward tumble at the BRIT awards after her cape got stuck. Speaking about it after, the Queen of Pop said "I attribute a lot of the fact that I came out all right because I'm in good shape."

The final tower in Ballymun was torn down, and Longboat Quay residents were told the docklands apartments needed €4M worth of works carried out to make them fire safe.

 

The €20 was the latest note to get a facelift, and new security features including new water marks and images that react to light.

And... Star Wars broke box office records around the world as The Force Awakens hit cinemas in December. Part of the movie was filmed in Ireland.
