A 14 year old boy, who was questioned by Gardaí over a fire which destroyed a factory in Drogheda overnight, has been released without charge.

The teenager was arrested a short distance from the blaze at the Dawn Paper factory on the Donore Road.

At around half nine last night emergency services were called to the Donore Industrial Estate.

There they found the Dawn Paper factory completely engulfed by flames.

A spokesperson for the fire service said the blaze had been compounded by gas cylinders discovered on the premises.

Investigations into the cause of the fire led to the arrest of a 14-year-old boy close to the scene - he was questioned over suspected criminal damage - but has since been released without charge.

Firefighters worked through the night to bring the blaze under control, but it continues to smolder today and they expect to remain there for many hours to come.

So far there are no reports of any injuries.
