Dublin City Council’s opening up 100 new beds for the city’s rough sleepers.

Bru Aimsir is a new facility just off Thomas Street near the Digital Hub.

It comes a day after Anthony Flynn from Inner City Helping Homeless expressed concern about the promised extra places

“We hear there’s 200 beds open over the last two weeks and I’m asking where are they”.

The beds are just some of the new ones that are coming into the system as part of the cold weather initiative.

Cathal Morgan is from the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive:

“There’ll be 80 beds for males and 20 for females. This roughly correlates to the fact that the predominance of rough sleeping tends to be towards males rather than females”.

The facility will be run by Crosscare and Cathal says it will also provide medical help for those who need it.

“There’s engagement through professional key workers, there’s holistic needs assessment, there’s looking at what are the alternative options for people in terms of long term accommodation”.

More beds, for couples and families who’re homeless, will be opening up in the next few weeks.
